FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police are investigating a disturbing trend of luxury cars disappearing from residential driveways.
Honest thieves are taking advantage of unlocked car doors with keys conveniently left inside.
Fort Lauderdale detectives sounded the alarm and sat down with Precinct 10 Crime Specialist Bridgette Matter to discuss rising rates of car thefts in affluent neighborhoods.
Sergeant Patrick O’Brien of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department has worked out cases involving high-end vehicles from Mercedes to Ferraris that are being stolen with alarming frequency.
It is surprising how easily these thieves operate, taking advantage of residents’ false sense of security.
Investigators say theft rings in three counties are taking high-value cars to sell at a fraction of their cost.
In one case a custom Rolls Royce worth hundreds of thousands was stolen, and in another a Range Rover with an expensive handbag inside.
O’Brien said the solution is simple: lock your doors and take your keys inside.
The robberies are creating a lot of work for the police department who say that the robberies happen every day.
Police are asking anyone who recognizes someone in surveillance videos to report it.
