Škoda Auto is canceling some production shifts due to a shortage of parts. Some parts of cars are missing, such as armrests, seats, shadows and others, the weekly Škodovácký odbář reported. According to Lidové noviny (LN) today, the reason is the new rule regarding car safety against cyber attacks. Restrictions in Mladá Boleslav apply to night shifts, in the plant in Kvasiny Saturday shifts are largely cancelled. Some of the workers at home will be fully paid. The unions said they had resolved a hurdle for them on the employer’s side with compensation for wages, which is mostly a day’s wages.
According to LN, the automaker explains the problems with the supply of parts according to the new regulations of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), which relate to the cyber security of vehicles and which will come into effect in July. They impose relatively strict conditions on cars against cyber-attacks and on the security of the supply chain of car companies. “In close cooperation with our partners, we constantly monitor and analyze our supply chains in order to be able to react quickly and reduce the potential impact of to be in production with the aim of delivering as many cars as possible to our customers,” said Škoda spokesman Pavel Jína LN.
Škoda Auto has also solved problems with parts shortages in the past. Last year, production was limited at the beginning of the year by a lack of chips. The closures affected plants in Mladá Boleslav and Vrchlabí at the end of January, and later also the plant in Kvasiny.
