The Cuban health authorities have alerted the population about an outbreak of hepatitis A cases in the territory of Cienfuegos, specifically in the community of Reina, where an alert has been issued about the symptoms and measures that can be taken to prevent this disease. .
According to the state media Perla Visión, more than 5,000 residents in the aforementioned community have been affected by the situation, which is why work has begun on the streets in recent days to deal with the current situation.
Among the efforts is cleaning the waste that abounds in the town, and working at various points with citizens to prevent said discomfort.
The situation is due to problems that have been reported for years, but have not been resolved by the authorities. According to the testimony of one of the community members, he has reported for 11 years the presence of sewage in the street where he lives, to which no solution has been given.
Likewise, another citizen told the aforementioned state media that, for a long time, drinking water arrived at homes without chlorine, which represents a danger to the health of the inhabitants.
Hepatitis A is a viral disease that affects the liver and can be transmitted through consumption of contaminated water or food, or through direct contact with an already infected person.
Symptoms of the disease include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, fever and general malaise. In more severe cases, the disease can cause jaundice, that is, a yellowing of the skin and eyes, which indicates clear liver damage.
Given the situation, the health authorities of Cienfuegos recommended maintaining strict personal hygiene, also advising those who present symptoms to immediately go to a health center to receive medical attention.
The official media affirms that, although the controls of several outbreaks have been completed, the staff continues to carry out investigations in the homes, this to “maintain health surveillance.”
It is important to remember that this is not the first time that the province of Cienfuegos has been affected by an outbreak of hepatitis, since in January of last year the health alarms were activated again.
