The futuristic installation features a 24/7 live stream between the two destinations, enabling real-time interaction between Dubliners, New Yorkers and visitors.
Do you want to see what people do in New York without flying there? People on the streets of Dublin were introduced to life as a New Yorker through a new “portal”.
The futuristic installation features a 24-hour live stream of the two iconic cities, and there are plans to connect other cities in the future.
Planned to make Dublin a European Smart Tourist City 2024, city dwellers are using the connection for other purposes.
Read on to find out the best ways to use the portal so far.
Why did Dublin and New York create a “portal”?
“We are delighted to connect Dublin with New York, with whom we share a deep historical and cultural connection,” said Dublin Mayor Daithí de Róiste after launching the portal to a crowd of hundreds in Dublin on Wednesday.
“From July, the Dublin portal will also be connected to other global city destinations in Poland, Brazil and Lithuania. »
The main idea behind the portal is connection. It was given the green light in Dublin as part of the city’s recent designation as a European Smart Tourist City 2024.
“Portals are an invitation to meet people across borders and differences and discover our world as it is: united and one,” explained Benediktas Gylys, a Lithuanian artist who created the portal.
Talk to the locals through the portal
The portal has been popular with Dublin residents, with large crowds gathering to check out what’s happening across the pond.
There have been some interesting developments in the 24 hours since its launch.
In a clip shared on social media, a Dubliner can be seen trying to send his phone number to a certain someone on the other side of New York.
And another man who was circling a girl in New York called a man in Dublin after connecting through the portal.
A video was also circulating showing the police physically removing someone who was standing in front of the gate.
In a more dramatic scene, an Irish university shared a photo of one of its American students connecting with his mother in New York through the portal camera.
In a statement to L’Observatoire de l’Europe Travel, the team behind the portals responded to these creative views: “We are overwhelmed by the comments, which have been extremely positive. We are not trying to recommend a specific way of how people should interact with portals or any other. »
He continues: “Instead, the portals are an invitation to meet others and for people to draw out their own interpretations and feelings. In this sense, we are only spectators of this event, and it is good to see how much creative energy people have and how powerful human connection can be.
Where can I see the portal?
Until Autumn, visitors and locals will find the portal on Dublin’s O’Connell Street, with the iconic GPO building and the Spire as a backdrop.
In New York, you can find it at Flatiron South Public Plaza, on Broadway, on Fifth Avenue and on 23rd Street, next to the famous Flatiron building.
Other ports are also installed in Lublin in Poland and Vilnius in Lithuania, according to the manufacturer’s website.
