/ world today news/ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to postpone the start of the ground operation in the Gaza Strip because he is skeptical about the plans of the military, the American portal “Axios” reported, citing anonymous sources in the know.
“He is a bit skeptical about Israel’s military plans – and wants more time,” the post said.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, US President Joe Biden wants to buy time for Netanyahu, who “has his reasons” for postponing the operation in the enclave.
“Biden fears that a quick, impulsive attack on Gaza would plunge Israel into a protracted, bloody street battle that could kill tens of thousands of people without destroying Hamas,” Axios reports.
Washington also would not want the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and other groups to enter the conflict, which would put the US military in the region under threat.
As the Axios sources note, the Israeli prime minister is ready to give more time to negotiations for the release of the prisoners and at the same time to prepare the IDF for combat operations.
A day ago, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that the ground operation in the Gaza Strip was being delayed due to possible “death traps” that could lead to significant losses. At the same time, as IDF chief of staff Herzi Halevi said yesterday, the army has prepared a “high-quality plan” for an offensive.
