Driver dies after crashing his car into a White House fence

Washington. A driver died after crashing his car into an exterior gate of the White House in Washington on Saturday night, the US Secret Service said.

“Shortly before 10:30 p.m., a vehicle traveling at high speed collided with an exterior perimeter gate of the White House complex,” the service said in a statement on the social media platform “no threat” to the White House itself.

The agents who arrived at the scene “tried to provide aid to the driver who was discovered deceased,” the statement said.

The Secret Service, along with police and firefighters from the District of Columbia, launched an investigation into the fatal accident, said Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the Secret Service, which is in charge of White House security.

Guglielmi added that there was “no threat or implications for public safety.”

In January, authorities arrested another person who also crashed a vehicle into the exterior gate of the complex.

The White House has seen a series of high-profile intrusion incidents in recent years, prompting the construction in 2020 of a taller, stronger metal fence around the perimeter of the iconic mansion.
