Bayer Leverkusen’s season will forever go down in football history.
Thursday evening, the new German champions hosted Roma in the semi-final second leg of the Europa League (0-2 first leg victory). Manhandled and tied on the whole of the two matches ten minutes from the end (0-2), Bayer once again turned the tide. As often this season, the Werkself made the difference in theAlonso Time to snatch a draw (2-2) and a ticket for the C3 final, in Dublin.
By scoring these two goals (82′ and… 90+7′), Bayer has above all erased a 61-year-old record! With 49 consecutive matches without defeat (40 wins, 9 draws), the German club now holds the record for invincibility in Europe ahead of Benfica (48 matches) in 1963.
Another record could soon fall as Bayer Leverkusen can become the first German club to complete a league season without defeat. Two obstacles still stand in its way: Bochum and Augsburg.
There are therefore four matches left for the troops of Xabi Alonso to achieve the perfect season: two in the league, the Europa League final on May 22 against Atalanta Charles De Ketelaere and the German Cup final three days later against Kaiserslautern, residents of the second division.
