The Supreme Court of Colombia once again postpones the election of the new attorney general

Gerson Chaverra, president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia,

MADRID, 22 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia, Gerson Chaverra, reported this Thursday that none of the three candidates for attorney general have obtained the necessary votes, so the election has been postponed once again, this time until March 7th.

Thus, neither Amelia Pérez nor Ángela María Buitrago nor Luz Adriana Camargo have achieved the minimum of 16 supports required to take the reins of the Attorney General’s Office of Colombia to replace Francisco Barbosa, and the position will temporarily remain in the hands of Deputy Attorney General Martha Mancera. .

«Today there was quite important progress in the voting framework, in the sense that the blank vote was significantly diluted and one of the candidates was able to obtain a significant number of votes, which allows us to optimistically foresee that “We are close to reaching consensus,” Chaverra concluded.

Throughout this Thursday, marches have been held in several cities in the country in support of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, in which, among other issues, the Supreme Court of Justice has been urged to hurry to elect a new prosecutor. Previous rounds of voting have also been marked by civil protests.Copy to clipboard
