The former president and Republican presidential candidate USA, Donald Trumpplans to send special forces from his country to Mexico to assassinate drug traffickers if he is elected to govern the country again in November of this year.
According to the American magazine Rolling StoneTrump has expressed the idea of sending these forces “with or without the support of the Mexican government” to his campaign advisors.
These “special forces” would aim to kill the leaders of the main drug cartels in the neighboring country, the US media reported.
One of Trump’s campaign promises is to “declare war” on the Mexican cartels.
On his campaign website, the former president details the measures he will take to achieve this goal, including ordering the Pentagon to “appropriately use special forces and other overt and covert actions to inflict maximum damage on leadership, infrastructure and operations.” of the cartels.
In turn, the Republican proposes designating drug trafficking groups as terrorists, an idea that has also been proposed by legislators of his party in Congress.
The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has rejected this last proposal, accusing it of being a propaganda strategy by conservative politicians. In January 2024, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa implemented a similar strategy to counter violence in his country. In the last decade, conservative leaders such as the Salvadoran Nayib Bukele and the Filipino Rodrigo Duterte have shared similar speeches.
Trump’s campaign, which has a strong anti-immigrant component, has also linked the handling of the southern border by Joe Biden with the increase in deaths from opioids, especially fentanyl, in the United States. EFE (I)
