Taxi, after the meeting at Mimit comes the strike: demonstration in Rome on 21 May

The meeting at Mimit between Minister Urso and the taxi drivers’ representatives does not appease the white cars. Indeed, the acronyms believe that they have not received any reassurance from Minister Urso on the issuing of the implementing decrees for the sector, which among other things concern the issue of regulation of digital platforms. For this reason, taxi drivers have called a national strike for May 21st and a large demonstration in Rome.

The officialization came from Unica Cgil, Fast, Ugl, Uti, Tam, Claai Unione artisans, Satam, Or.sa taxi, Uritaxi, Atlt, Ati taxi, Sitan/Atn, Usb taxi, Unimpresa, Federtaxi cisal.

“We will not call off the strike – they explained – as the minister’s reassurances were not sufficient. Therefore, we urge the entire category to remain vigilant: colleagues keep themselves diligently informed by remembering this date of the stoppage which, in the absence of news could turn into one of the largest demonstrations ever held by the category. Never before have we been aware that we are risking our future and that of our families.”

The action will take place from 8am to 10pm, “while still guaranteeing the social transport service for the elderly, disabled and sick” explained the general secretary Claudio Tarlazzi with the national secretary Marco Verzari of Uiltrasporti. “The minister – they say – has, in fact, passed the responsibility to the Ministry of Transport for the deadlock on the texts of the implementing decrees and of the Prime Ministerial Decree of which, to date, the definitive texts are not known, and did not provide full clarity regarding the meeting held at the ministry with the global head of Uber. The decrees on the National Electronic Register and on the Service Sheet, as well as the Prime Ministerial Decree for the regulation of Electronic Platforms, are fundamental for the reorganization of the sector which currently sees a very high rate of illegal activity favored by the lack of certain rules for everyone”.

For Nicola Di Giacobbe of Unica Taxi Cgil “it is certain that if the definitive text of the decrees were the one we have read, the liberalization of the public service would be a fact and the strike on the 21st would only be the first step of a long protest. The government’s inaction must be a cause for alarm for every Italian taxi driver. For this reason we recommend maximum participation in the strike on May 21st in defense of work and the right of users to a public service”.
