♦ It is very difficult to grow a medical business that is generic and does not differentiate itself. I think the opportunity for doctors who intend to be entrepreneurs is to open a center in a medical space.
Donna Medical Center from Bucharest, a business focused on medical services for women, founded in 2011 by Elena Claudia Teodorescu, a psychologist specializing in breast imaging, estimates a business of 7 million euros for this year , compared to 5.5 million euros last year.
“In the first quarter of this year, we worked to get a new MRI approved, as part of the implementation of our advanced imaging center in the Pipera area. This is a 1.5 Tesla MRI on which we can do almost all kinds of tests. The investment amounted to around 700,000 euros”, said Vlad Teodorescu, managing partner of Donna Medical Center clinics, within ZF Private Health.
The foundations of Donna Medical were laid in 2011, and eight years later the second clinic, Donna Medical Center in Pipera, was established, where an imaging center was developed with 3 Tesla MRI and CT (computed tomograph).
In the clinic in Pipera, the space was expanded, and the investment also included the configuration of a new space, as well as the installation of an MRI and the addition of new offices. Last year, the number of unique patients increased to more than 60,000.
The demand for women’s medical services is increasing, the clinics have the ability to navigate for breast cancer and gynecology examinations.
Donna Medical Center finished last year with a business of 5.5 million euros, and for this year it estimates a business of 7 million euros.
“We are analyzing the idea of taking us outside of Bucharest with the concept that started here. We are now working on this analysis with experts to determine the chances of success.”
The elements that have been taken into account are the access to doctors with experience in the place where the company works, and here the university cities are the most attractive, according to him . In addition to the part related to human resources, doctors, another element that is taken into account is the market, potential patients individually.
“Here we are looking at both the competition or what is being developed in a geographic area, as well as the purchasing power of patients. So we are talking about a mix of doctors, competition, purchasing power and there are other elements too”.
Competition is increasingly fierce in the capital, new establishments are opening, both start-ups, and the big players continue to develop organically or through acquisitions. property
He specifies that it is very difficult to grow a medical business that is generic and does not practically differentiate itself through something different strategically. And then, in his opinion, it is the opportunity for doctors who intend to become entrepreneurs to open their own center in a specific medical area.
“We believe that with this smaller size we will be able to be more flexible, more flexible and better respond to the needs of patients”.
Donna Medical Center plans to invest in digitization processes to improve efficiency. In addition, Vlad Teodorescu also says that he sees technology as an opportunity.
“We’re talking about protocol-based technology, artificial intelligence. They can help doctors interpret certain tests better and possibly faster. We are talking about technologies, for example voice recognition. This part of the product formulation is very important and helps us streamline our process to release products faster, which means a benefit to the patient. Software has shown that we are thinking about integration, such as voice recognition.”
The company has grown organically in recent years and has always invested in expansion. Last year, in the autumn, the company opened a special oncology center for women with cancer, an investment of 250,000 euros. Before that, two years ago, the company opened a medical treatment center, Recondition.
Donna Medical currently has 85 doctors and around 10% of the company’s income comes from contracts with the Health Centre. These are revenues from imaging, MRI, CT, mammography and oncology.
“We should have a national screening program for various diseases. All kinds of pilot versions are being tried, there are all kinds of teams that are working together, that are thinking about these pilot programs, but we haven’t seen and we haven’t been told that we should to know at the end that there is something. proceeding in this sense.”
Companies operating on the market of private medical services, in specialized health care, reported a total business of 10.3 billion lei (2 billion euros) in 2022, up 13% compared to the previous year and five times more than ten years ago, according to his ZF analysis based on data provided by ONRC. More precisely, it is the turnover of the 9,803 companies that work under CAEN code 8622 – special medical assistance activities.
