The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IAC Court) issued a ruling in which it finds that Peru is responsible for violating the rights to a healthy environment, health, personal integrity, a dignified life, access to political participation, guarantees judicial and judicial protection of 80 inhabitants of La Oroya (Junín).
The ruling indicates that the residents of La Oroya suffered from air, water and soil pollution caused by the activities in the La Oroya Metallurgical Complex and however, they point out that the State did not comply with the supervision or regularization of these activities.
The Inter-American Court indicated that it had analyzed the medical treatment received by those who developed health conditions due to the pollution generated by mining activity and indicated that many of those affected received harassment and threats for having carried out activities in defense of the environment.

Along these lines, he pointed out that the Peruvian State has the obligation to investigate, identify and prosecute on a case-by-case basis those responsible for the harassment against environmental defenders.
It was also determined that the State must carry out a diagnosis about the levels of contamination that La Oroya currently has so that a remediation plan for this damage can be made.
Finally, it was ordered that Peru guarantee that those affected by mining pollution receive specialized medical care that includes medical, psychological and psychiatric treatment.
