Spanish Public Finance Drops Tax Evasion Charges Against Shakira: Case Closed

The public prosecutor revealed in his statement that the decision to close the case came because of “insufficient evidence” to prosecute the Colombian artist criminally.

Shakira is under investigation for tax evasion costs estimated at 6.7 million euros, equivalent to ($7.2 million), on her income in 2018, through a company abroad.

This is the second case involving the star Shakira, as she was previously tried for tax fraud in Barcelona, ​​​​​​​​​and the Colombian pop star Shakira then reached a legal settlement regarding her alleged evasion taxes in Spain. This is to avoid a penalty that could have reached three years in prison, as the court claimed that Shakira avoided paying 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) in income tax. in Spain between 2012 and 2014.

As part of the deal, the pop star agreed to pay a fine of 50% of the amount due; That is, more than 7.3 million euros, as well as accepting to pay another fine of 438 thousand euros, to avoid a three-year prison sentence.

At the trial session, held in November 2023, the judge asked Shakira, “Do you admit the facts and agree to the new punishments requested?”, and Shakira answered: “There are.”
