The president Vladimir Putin said today that Russia will do everything to avoid a clash of world powers, but will not allow anyone to threaten her, in his speech on the anniversary of her victory Soviet Union on Nazi Germany in World War II.
Putin was addressing Russian soldiers of all ranks in Red Square.
“Russia will do everything to prevent a global conflict. But at the same time we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always in a state of combat readiness.” Putin said in a short speech as fine snowflakes fell on the huge square.
After calling for a minute’s silence, Putin ended his speech with the following words: “For Russia! For the win! Ask!” signaling thousands of soldiers to respond with three loud cheers.
Moscow is strengthening its nuclear deterrent
Russia is warning its Western rivals that it feels compelled to strengthen its nuclear deterrent because of what it describes as the West’s “escalation” path, Russia’s deputy foreign minister said today. Sergey Ryabkov.
As reported by the RIA news agency citing his statements, Russia is not changing its own nuclear doctrine, which allows the use of nuclear weapons in the event of an existential threat to the state.
“For now, there are no changes regarding this. But the situation itself is changing, so it is a matter of constant analysis how the key assumptions in this area relate to our security assurance needs. We are warning our adversaries that the (following) escalation path reasonably confronts us with the need to take steps that essentially mean strengthening our deterrence measures.” Ryabkov said.
As he pointed out, the drills involving Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons announced by Moscow earlier this week are part of those efforts.
