Deluxe blow dry: journey to the first three “Hair Spas”

Waterproof pillow, fountains on the head, scalp massage, brushes that caress the lengths, trichological analysis, steam, aromatherapy and styling. These are the main services that have made the so-called famous on social media Head Japanese Spas, real hair spas that combine relaxation and psychophysical well-being with hair and scalp care, fundamental for Japanese women since ancient times. Having gone viral on TikTok – where “Japanese Head Spa” has over 80 million posts while the hashtag #HeadSpa is close to half a billion – these temples that calm the mind while making the hair shine have made their way to the West.

In Italy, while salons offer more and more personalized wellness treatments, in the last year from Milan to Lecce, passing through Rome, Parma, Genoa, Macerata and many other large and small cities, many centers have opened which define themselves as “the first Hair spa”.
It’s difficult to understand which one really is the first, also because the definition of Hair spa is large: usually these are salons where classic services are added hair analysis, personalized consultations and treatments (often using steam), masks and massages. Their birth is the consequence of the so-called “hair skinification”, that is, a new richer and more meticulous haircare routine that includes luxurious and sustainable masks, shampoos, conditioners and oils. Already on the rise since 2021, this trend has led to the spread of ad hoc centres, moving haircare from the classic salon to a place more similar to a Spa: so in the last year the hairdresser has increasingly become a luxury service to be enjoyed with a glass of prosecco in hand surrounded by aromatherapeutic scents and new age music.

This is demonstrated by new spaces entirely dedicated to hair care opened inside the most luxurious spas, such as that of the Bulgari Hotel in Milan where theHair & Beauty Salon by Roberto D’Antonio. Also in Milan, the first opened its doors in 2022 Sisley House Italian where you can discover the Sisley Paris universe, but also its widespread brand Hair Rituel by Sisley. In fact, alongside face and body treatments, Maison Sisley offers a ritual dedicated to the well-being of hair and scalp: The Great Regenerating, Restructuring Hair Treatment. It is a personalized hair treatment that aims to regenerate the head: in this case the focus is not the styling (the drying required is very simple and, those who prefer, can also do it themselves), but it is the repair of the hair, which takes place with a relaxing ritual done at the hair wash in a very particular station, which puts comfort first.

In Rome, however, a similar service is offered by the Aleph Rome Hotel, in the heart of the capital, a few steps from Piazza di Spagna, where the space was born in collaboration with Fabrizio Narducci Le Caveau by Narducci Hair & Spa. For hair, the menu offers the Shu Uemura Treatment, a sensorial journey designed for dehydrated and brittle hair. The ceremony begins with a consultation and a hair diagnosis to identify the most suitable products then, following the traditional ritual of Japanese tea, continues with gestures typical of shiatsu massage, which relaxes tension, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, going to take proper care of your scalp. Finally, an aperitif on the terrace of the Organics Sky Garden, framed by the spectacular infinity pool.
