Exactly 100 years ago, an accidental invention changed the world – 2024-05-07 21:37:30

Most of the inventions in the world happened by accident, most often because of everyday problems. This is also the case with the appearance of the plaster.

The idea of its creation was the American Earl Dixon. Exactly a century ago, he worked in a company that produced gauze and bandages.

His wife Josephine loved to cook, but was quite careless. She often cut her fingers or burned her hand.

Earl Dixon constantly bandaged her arm using an adhesive cloth bandage to secure the gauze in place. Each time he cut the two materials separately and depending on the size of the wound, which took a long time.

Also, hand-rolling the gauze was impractical, and during one such dressing, he came up with the idea of ”gluing” the gauze and the adhesive bandage.

Dixon saw in his idea good chances for production implementation and presented the invention in question to the management of the company. They soon launched the first hand-made band-aid under the BAND-AID brand.

At first, sales were not satisfactory, but the company’s marketing department decided that cooperation with scout clubs would be very useful for promoting the product.

Dixon’s miraculous invention turned out to be magical, mothers went crazy for it, and Earl Dixon was promoted to vice president of the company – the discovery brought in billions of dollars.
