Women in love, a female investigation

It comes out for Affiori Write on medebut of Sara Manuela Cacioppo which investigates the feminine, feelings and society through three characters: the rebellious Flora, at times disturbing, divided between her studies and the fleeting sex that protects her from having to abandon herself to love; the sinuous Viola who, coming from a poor neighborhood, lives in Rome and has become a writer and translator; and Margherita, locked in an oblique marriage with the handsome plastic surgeon Emanuele.

The theater of the events is Sicily, that of a welcoming Palermo, Arab and steeped in legends, of Catania made of vanedde and surmounted by the looming majesty of the volcano, and of a Syracuse enclosed in Ortigia «where the houses seem to be made of organza and the water has sapphire facets » . But there is also the tasty Paris of chocolate bread.

Between “comings and goings”, friendships that are almost always saving and “revolutionary” encounters that nevertheless change lives and points of view, the novel tells the story of the intertwining of more or less intimate (often very intimate) everyday lives that flow through consciences, solidly protagonists of an internal monologue that leaves no breathing space.

The structure of the novel, not always linear and fragmented by letters and messages, accompanies the internal disorders of the protagonists well and is supported by an adult language, appropriately punctuated with Sicilian and French, where the narrative required it.

Keeping the focus on the female universe, in fact, Cacioppo brings into the pages of her novel the value of female friendship but also the scourge of violence against women, the relationship with motherhood and with sex and gender fluidity.

Reading the novel thus becomes a journey of awareness accomplished through the events of Viola, Flora and Margherita, forced to clash with prejudice that has never been defeated, dysfunctional relationships, the more or less obvious search for a carnal and absolute love which is imprinted on their skin: a love written on them.
