According to Ulrika Bergsten, there is a purpose for China’s leaders to make more friends around the world.
– He suspects that Donald Trump may become president of the United States, he knows that he needs friends in other places and he knows that Macron, who was in China a year ago, has said that you want to have your own relationship with China and not always automatically have to follow in the USA’s footsteps, says Bergsten.
During the visit to France, the two leaders will discuss, among other things, trade issues. For China, it is about tackling accusations that the country, with state support, is out-competing European companies in several areas.
The focus will also be on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. According to Ulrika Bergsten, the French message is clear: Stop supporting the Russian economy.
– They want Xi Jinping to stop trading with Russia and selling things to Russia that they can then convert and use into weapons, she says.
After France, Xi Jinping will meet leaders from Serbia and Hungary.
