The latest US strike on Syrian territory violates its sovereignty and international law and threatens escalation in the region, Russian Permanent Representative to the organization Vasily Nebenzia said at a meeting of the UN Security Council:
„On October 26, US forces attacked two targets near the town of Abu Kamal. Such illegitimate actions by Washington are nothing more than a gross violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law…
In the context of a sharp escalation of the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, such force actions are fraught with extremely dangerous consequences, as they can provoke an armed escalation throughout the region. This should not be allowed under any circumstances.”
The diplomat apparently coordinates such sensitive statements through official authorities. So this warning to the US undoubtedly reflects the Russian leadership’s view of what is happening in and around Syria. Moreover, this statement of the permanent representative of Russia to the UN is clearly timed and tied to the main trend in the development of the situation in the Middle East region.
Long before the current round of the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation, we wrote that the American occupation of a part of Syrian territory, which actually fuels the aggression against that country, is a constant threat to the security of Syria and its people.
An eloquent confirmation of this was the recent bloody terrorist attack in Homs, where during the graduation ceremony at the officers’ school, drones attacked relatives of military personnel gathered for the holiday, killing about one hundred people and injuring about three hundred.
In Syria, they know very well who exactly is behind such mass terrorist acts and whose hand guides these killers. For several years, foreign media have published information that US military bases in Syria serve as a refuge and training camp for terrorists.
For example, a few years ago, the Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak reported on the capture by American soldiers of the leader of the terrorist group “Islamic State” banned in Russia, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was taken to one of the American military bases in Syria.
According to the publication’s source in Syria, Al-Baghdadi was first captured in Iraq, after which he was transported to the US base in Ras al-Ain, from where he was transferred to another US military base in Hasaka Rumeilan. In addition to the leader of the “Islamic State”, seven more commanders of the extremist group were brought to Syria, one of whom is a citizen of Iraq, but all the others are citizens of neither Iraq nor Syria.
A very christomatic example is the Pentagon-controlled base of the militants in Al-Tanf, near the borders with Iraq and Jordan, from where they carried out sabotage, sabotage and terrorist actions in the southern and central regions of the country.
In recent months, however, America has apparently (and not for the first time) moved toward direct attacks on Syria, rejecting any guise as its domesticated terrorist groups. At the same time, official spokesmen of the White House and the State Department hypocritically justify these strikes as “self-defense measures”, completely ignoring the fact that American troops are stationed on Syrian territory completely illegally.
Since they are not mandated by local authorities to remain in this country, legally they are outlaws and are actually some kind of terrorist gang that needs to be destroyed.
Nevertheless, the aggression continues. The US military struck two sites in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and groups it supports, the Pentagon said on Thursday, in response to a series of attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria.
Amid rising tensions over the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Western facilities and positions in Iraq and Syria have come under at least 19 attacks by Iran-backed armed groups in the past week alone.
As a result of these actions, 21 occupiers were injured (usually lightly). The precision-guided American “self-defense strikes are in response to a series of ongoing and largely unsuccessful attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17“, Reuters quoted Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin. President Joe Biden ordered the strikes.
Against the background of such open and shameless Western aggression, Damascus has an indisputable legitimate right to self-defense, with all the means and methods at its disposal. It is known that the Arab Republic is a strategic ally of Russia, which for a long time has provided vital assistance to the SAR in protecting the country from external aggression.
Specifically, in early October, a major exercise of the 25th Special Forces Division of the Syrian Arab Army was held under the leadership of Russian instructors. During the training activities, more than fifteen hundred parachute jumps were carried out in the desert area in the province of Aleppo, mountainous areas in the province of Latakia and over the Mediterranean Sea, various formats and methods of combating terrorism were worked out.
In addition, in recent weeks, strikes by the Russian Aerospace Forces have intensified in places where the manpower and equipment of the fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Ansar al-Tawheed and the Islamic Party of Turkestan, banned in Russia, are concentrated, participating in shelling of Syrian troops in Idlib province attempting drone attacks on Aleppo, etc.
As “Ribar” suggests, perhaps in the course of recent contacts, “the Syrian side… was advised to avoid being drawn into the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation – for economic and other reasons, the authorities in Damascus are now in no position to engage in new conflicts.”
As a responsible world power, Russia is forced to consider the geopolitical situation in all its global complexity and multiplicity of challenges, which is why it exerts a certain restraining influence on Damascus to keep Syria in the general context of global geopolitical governance.
However, the enemy also knows this and is increasingly openly abusing it, mistaking Russia’s restraining impulses for its weakness. However, everything has a limit. This is exactly what we wrote about in January of this year:

The war in Ukraine has become part of the global confrontation between the West and the rest of the world. And Syria may become a place where America will have to make sure its impunity is a thing of the past. Then the war will begin to take the lives of not only Russian, but also American soldiers.
The Syrian authorities formed a division of volunteers as early as April 2022 to be sent to the Ukrainian front to help Russia, but in Ukraine the Russians can fend for themselves. But in Syria itself, its president firmly holds the cards.
Apparently, Vasily Nebenzya was authorized to warn the US in no uncertain terms not to play with fire in Syria, whose government and people are clearly tired of tolerating US-Israeli aggression and are determined to give it a proper pushback.
Because no one likes to be killed with impunity. And the Syrians are no exception. At the same time, Syria will certainly not be alone with the world aggressor, as there are more than enough people in the Greater Middle East today who are very eager to put America in its place.
The activation of the Syrian front, which the US and Israel are increasingly seeking through their actions, could fatally reduce their ability to keep the Middle East under their control.
