I would abandon WhatsApp India if they force it to remove encryption in messages

Madrid. Meta is willing to remove its WhatsApp messaging application, where it has 500 million users, from the Indian market if the country’s authorities force it to withdraw end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

The Government of India introduced the Information Technology Rules (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) in 2021, which aims to avoid the limitations that E2EE poses on access to certain content in the investigation of crimes. , with the support of a court order.

Meta’s refusal to withdraw E2EE is being debated this week in court, as reported by Forbes and reported by social media expert Matt Navarra. During his intervention, WhatsApp’s lawyer even said that if they are forced to break the encryption, the messaging application will disappear.

His position could lead him to abandon WhatsApp’s main market, where it currently has 500 million users, out of the three billion it comprises globally.

It is not the first time that Meta has confronted the authorities for his defense of E2EE. The United Kingdom and the European Union have tried to force the withdrawal of this encryption with new legislation.

And recently 32 European police chiefs, in an open letter, urged the technology sector to promote security by design and abandon end-to-end encryption because, in their view, it undermines their abilities to investigate serious crimes.
