The written Polish secondary school leaving examination consists of two parts. The first one is the part called “Polish language in use”. In this part, high school graduates will find, among others: reading comprehension tasks, using correct Polish, an exercise in creating synthesizing notes and “Historical and literary test”. In the test, the student should demonstrate knowledge of the required reading material.
The second part of the final exam paper is an essay. Students can choose from two topics, based on which they create the so-called argumentative text. It is this part of the exam that we will look at in the article below.
Two formats for the Matura exam in 2024. Formula 2023 and formula 2015
In 2024, the Matura exam will be conducted in two formulas – the so-called Formula 2023 and Formula 2015. They differ in the scope of examination requirements. Who is taking the Matura exam in the 2023 formula and who in the 2015 formula?
The vast majority of high school graduates will take the high school leaving exam in “Formula 2023”.including: graduates of a 4-year general secondary school, graduates of a 5-year technical secondary school, graduates of a second-cycle vocational school based on an 8-year primary school, as well as people who obtained a certificate of completion of a 4-year general secondary school based on external examinations and graduates of post-primary secondary schools and graduates of international branches with an IB diploma.
In turn, Formula 2015 will be joined by, among others: graduates of all types of schools from previous years, i.e. a 3-year general secondary school, an art school implementing the program of a 3-year general secondary school, a 4-year technical secondary school, a specialized secondary school and a supplementary technical secondary school for youth, supplementing a general secondary school, graduates of a second-cycle vocational school on the foundation junior high school and people who obtained a certificate of completion of a 3-year general secondary school based on external examinations.
Essay topics for the high school final exam in 2023
Also in 2023, the topics of high school final exams depended on the formula. In the 2023 formula, the first topic of the essay was: Man is a creature full of contradictionsand others: What makes a person become a hero for another person?
The students were to choose one of the topics and write an essay considering the problem given in the topic, presenting their opinion and justifying it. Arguments also had to be presented referring to literary works and selected contexts (e.g. historical literary, literary, biographical, cultural, religious, mythological, biblical, historical, philosophical, existential, political, social), and one of the literary works should be compulsory reading , selected from the readings listed on pages 3 and 4 of the examination paper. The work should be at least 300 words.
In the 2015 Matura exam formula, the first topic was: How do unexpected circumstances affect human behavior? Consider the problem and justify your opinion by referring to a fragment of “Pan Tadeusz”, the entire work by Adam Mickiewicz and a selected cultural text.
The second topic is: Are unpleasant truths better than pleasant illusions? Consider the problem and justify your opinion, referring to the given fragments of “Przedwiośnia” by Stefan Żeromski and to selected cultural texts.
