06.05.2024 | More than half a million workers in the metal and electrical industry gave decisive impetus to the negotiation round at that time through a mass strike in the last quarter of 2022. In this way, IG Metall was able to negotiate strong collective agreements for the ME industry at the bargaining tables in the Republic. In addition to a total of 3,000 euros in tax-free inflation compensation bonuses, the union was also able to negotiate a two-part pay increase for colleagues: Monthly pay increased by 5.2 percent from June 2023, before another increase in the pay scales. it is expected to take place from May 2024. This made it possible to deal with the high levels of inflation in recent years.
The IG Metall tariff commissions are currently preparing the upcoming 2024 negotiation round and are currently debating demands. To this end, a national staff survey will be held before IG Metall’s member committees decide on their demands at the end of June. “It is already clear: the focus of the negotiation round will be on the payment issue. It’s about equipping the wallets of our colleagues. Inflation is falling, but in reality this means that products are rising faster, but still becoming more expensive. It is important to combat the loss of purchasing power, as private consumption in particular will be a vital pillar of the local economy in the next few years! Stopping the necessary economic stimulus would be fatal. At the same time, the subject of time jurisdiction is also being discussed,” explained IG Metall regional manager Thorsten Gröger.
Negotiations between IG Metall and employers’ associations will begin in mid-September. The peace obligation will end at the end of October, warning strikes would be possible from 29 October 2024.
