After it was published on Saturday night, the news inspired horror and sympathy in Germany and abroad (he played in Düsseldorf, Kaiserslautern, Duisburg, Bielefeld, Cottbus, Eindhoven, Rapid Vienna and Dinamo Zagreb).

What happened in the next few hours can hardly be described in words for “Schorsch,” as his friends call him. Koch on Saturday shortly after it was published on the Internet: “The outpouring of sympathy was just overwhelming and I would never have expected it!”

The chef was caught: “It was unbelievable, I’ve never experienced anything like it: the battery on my cell phone ran out in no time. The phone literally exploded. I can’t remember a time when I got so many calls and messages – even on my birthday.”

Fortuna Düsseldorf answered his heart’s desire. The crowd favorite was invited to the final home game of promotion candidate Fortuna against Magdeburg on Saturday afternoon (May 19).

Koch: “I would like to see a game again at every club I played for.”

Against Magdeburg, the keeper might even be able to sit next to his friends from the cult band “Die Toten Hosen”. The musicians in the punk band have been friends with Koch for decades.

After the “Pants” found out about Koch’s illness, the former world-class goalkeeper received a moving letter and a T-shirt with the inscription: “To the bitter end!”

Cook proudly: “Even if it’s silly: the T-shirt and the quote give me strength and inspire me. I am very grateful to the ‘Pants’ for this…”

Instead of being treated with chemotherapy in the hospital, Koch relies on help from America: “I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say this: I’m lucky that I earn a little more in my course- my professional life. and I am currently being treated with medications from the US that may not yet be approved here. I simply couldn’t stand the boredom in the cancer wards anymore. That raised me…!”
