Destructions and explosions in a violent riot in a prison in Mexico – Diario La Página – 2024-05-06 20:50:36

A group of inmates attempted a riot this Thursday at the La Pila prison, on the outskirts of the Mexican city of San Luis Potosí, demanding the resignation of the director of the penitentiary center, Arturo Cruz Andrade, for alleged mistreatment.

According to the prisoners’ relatives, cited by local media, there was a fight with knives when the protests began and explosions were heard inside the facility. After learning what happened, they went to the surrounding area and blocked a nearby road to demand the intervention of the Civil Guard.

In images spread on social networks, presumably filmed by an inmate, you can see hooded subjects causing damage, as well as the presence of smoke. “All this is happening because of the director,” one of the prisoners is heard shouting. “Help us from outside!” another exclaims to his relatives.

According to the first reports, at least one injured inmate was reported. However, authorities later ruled out any injuries and assured that the situation was under control.

In a statement, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of San Luis Potosí reported that, as part of the actions to restore order and tranquility, a commission was formed to engage in dialogue and respond to the requests of the prison population.

This is the second riot that has occurred in the La Pila panel. The previous one caused the death of two officers and an inmate during a transfer.
