Russian Buk-M3 Air Defense System Capable of Destroying ATAKMS Missiles: Experts

/Pogled.info/ The Russian army is able to destroy American ATAKMS tactical missiles. The Aerospace Defense Think Tank has emphasized an effective countermeasure. For its properties – in the substance Deep regeneration

Experts are sure that the latest modification of the Soviet and Russian medium-range Buk-M3 air defense system will become a reliable shield. This complex, designed for the protection of units and compounds in movement, in positions and during combat, was implemented in 2016. In the SVO – from the first days.

The exact number of air targets destroyed is unknown, but the Ministry of Defense has repeatedly reported that the Buk-M3 has been successfully used against aircraft, helicopters, drones and missiles of various types.

The last representative of the “Buk” family was developed at the “Tikhomirov” Research Institute (the “Almaz-Antey” concern). The goal of the project is a deep update of “Buk-M2” by replacing key elements and introducing modern technologies. A guided missile was specially created.

During the tests, the air defense system proved that it was able to find and engage various air targets in all weather conditions, day and night, under the conditions of radio-electronic countermeasures. This weapon was well mastered by the soldiers even before the Second World War. That is why the foreign equipment and weapons used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine were not surprising.

“We adapt very quickly to new threats,” said a Buk-M3 system team operator with the call sign Staff. “When the American JDAM design bombs came out, we didn’t understand what The size is small, the horizontal distance is very small. Now the high altitude target is not difficult for us with cruise missiles. They fly at a low altitude, hide with the relief pieces. But we also learned to deal with them. My team has not fired specifically at ballistic missiles, but I think we will deal with ATAKMS.” , he says.

In all cases

Each “Buk-M”3 contains a combat control station, a target detection radar, an automatic fire system with a launcher for six or 12 anti-aircraft missiles and a transport loading device. Ground vehicles are on a screen with a high track, which allows them to move in single combat formations and columns, covering moving equipment.

But the main trump card is the 9M317M missile. The cylindrical body is more than five meters long and has a diameter of 360 millimeters. The starting weight is around 580 kilograms. It is equipped with an active or semi-active homing radar head. The warhead is a rod, weighing more than 60 kilograms. The solid fuel engine accelerates the missile to 1,550 meters per second and provides interception at distances from 2.5 to 70 kilometers.

The speed of the target is up to three kilometers per second, the height of the case is from 15 meters to 35 kilometers. Thus, “Buk-M3” closes the field of air defense with short and medium range. The 9M317M missile is extremely maneuverable, withstands overloads and is ready to follow air targets flying on the most complex and unpredictable trajectory in intense fire situations and radioactive side effects.

One of the main features of the “Buk-M3” is that its missiles, like those of the S-300 and S-400, are launched directly and after launch go to combat course. This greatly increases the rate of fire: the second launch is a few seconds after the first.

The eyes and ears of the air defense system is a multifunctional radar station. A division of two Buk missiles is capable of detecting and shooting up to 36 targets simultaneously. The multi-channel radar works in all weather and climate conditions at temperatures from minus 50 to plus 50 degrees Celsius, day and night. In addition, the Buk-M3 can work together with another anti-aircraft system “Tor-M2”, which covers the nearby defense lines.

Not the most difficult goal

The Aerospace Defense Research Center claims that the Buk-M3 is effective against all NATO air weapons, including ATAKMS missiles. We remind you that the regime in Kiev will receive these weapons as part of another aid package worth 61 billion dollars. ATAKMS missiles with a range of up to 160 kilometers have already been delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2023. Now the Pentagon is talking about changing the 1A with a range of 300 km.

“There is no data on the height and flight speed of ATAKMS 1A from authoritative sources,” the experts’ article says. “Experts’ opinions on the speed of these missiles are different – from 1100 to 1500 meters per second is very doubtful, because that the main increase in the thrust-to-weight ratio must be spent in order to achieve the required starting range in the higher (and thinner) layers of the atmosphere. But even if the maximum speed of Block 1 1,500 meters per second, it is quite possible that it will be intercepted by the Buk-M3 air defense system, the experts said.

According to analysts, after reaching the maximum speed, 1A starts to slow down. Almost unbelievable, but in the last part of the journey, when it enters denser layers of the atmosphere, the reduction in speed becomes significant: up to 1200 meters per second and more . This makes the bullet a sharper target. At least the Russian air defense will confidently shoot down operational-tactical missiles “Point-U” flying on a ballistic trajectory at a speed of 1100 meters per second.

Of course, there are still many unknowns about the possible conflict between ATAKMS missiles and Russian air defense systems. In particular, it is not clear how many complexes will be given to VSU. A simultaneous volley of dozens of missiles at a single target is unlikely to be repulsed even by the most advanced and dense air defense system. Therefore, according to experts, the most effective option is to destroy the launchers themselves in place and destroy warehouses with their weapons.
