Giro 2024: Podium ceremony does not go smoothly for all three jersey wearers

Sunday May 5, 2024 at 10:13 am

The Giro d’Italia shared striking images of the podium ceremony after the opening stage to Turin. Three jersey wearers had difficulty putting on their leader’s jersey correctly, including stage winner and pink jersey Jhonatan Narváez of INEOS Grenadiers. A comical sight when you put it all together like this.

What seems? The leader’s jerseys that are awarded on the podium by the Giro d’Italia have a zipper at the front. In many other competitions the zipper is at the back, so that the riders dive into the sleeves with both hands and the shirt is closed at the back. But not now, and that looks a bit lame.

Classification leader Narváez made the mistake with the pink jersey, and a little later we also see that Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Wanty) wanted to put on the mountain jersey and Alex Baudin (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) the white jersey incorrectly. The fact that we do not see any images of the purple jersey leads us to conclude that Narváez – also leader in the points classification – had learned from his first ‘mistake’ with the pink jersey.

Filippo Fiorelli occasional wearer of purple jersey
During the second stage of the Giro to Oropa we will see Narváez in the pink jersey. Calmejane wears the blue mountain jersey and Baudin the white youth jersey. The purple points jersey will be on the shoulders of Filippo Fiorelli, because leader Narváez already wears the pink jersey and number two Calmejane is the official leader of the mountains jersey. This makes number three Fiorelli the occasional wearer of the purple.
