Ralph Lauren with a boutique show in New York – 2024-05-05 07:39:58

Ralph Lauren opted for a minimalist style in his latest fashion show, held in muted tones, which he presented to a limited group of people in a more intimate setting in his own offices in New York, reports AP.

Over the years, Ralph Lauren has been known for many spectacular fashion spectacles: for example, taking over Central Park for a lavish anniversary celebration or organizing a catwalk show against the backdrop of his impressive collection of classic cars.

But for his Fall/Holiday 2024 collection, he decided to go minimal—at least minimal from Ralph Lauren’s point of view. That meant an intimate Monday night show in a (comparatively) small design studio in his New York offices.

It was inspired by his first women’s fashion show in 1972, when he showed his work to editors and friends in his own office.

In front of a typically star-studded front row that included actresses Glenn Close, Jessica Chastain, Kerry Washington, Rebecca Hall and Jodie Turner-Smith, Lauren opened her show with a hint of timelessness as her muse, supermodel Christy Turlington, now 55, appeared in an elegant beige woolen coat.

This was followed by a series of models in soothing neutral tones: ochre, brown, grey, black and metallic. A soft palette characterizes both daytime outfits such as fitted jackets and sweaters with trousers, and evening outfits of delicate sequined dresses. There were bulky sweaters, lots of boots, and wide leather belts with buckles bearing his RL logo.

There were also Lauren’s familiar western touches, such as the long fringes on the coats and jacket sleeves. And especially the cowboy hat, which accompanied not only everyday ensembles, but also formed the spectacular finale with a memorable look – as an accessory to a dress with a bare back in sparkling gold.

Lauren, 84, made a brief appearance at the end of the show in well-worn jeans to cheers from the audience, which included Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Close wore Lauren’s white blazer and pant suit. “It’s a very, very special ensemble,” the actress said, adding: “It was made especially for me. To order. Five years ago. Wearing it, I received the Screen Actors Guild Award. And here I am. It looks just as beautiful. It’s a sin to wear something like this just once.”

Close added that when she grew up in New England, “the mentality was, you buy something that’s really good and you wear it until it wears out. That’s how I was brought up.”

After the show, guests walked a few blocks to Lauren’s Polo Bar restaurant, where the designer was once again greeted upon entry before munching on one of the restaurant’s signature burgers.

Lauren’s son David, the brand’s CEO, commented on the challenge of creating new designs each season: “You know everything is changing – you’re always looking at new fabrics, new silhouettes and new ways to bring the brand to life. But there is also a philosophy. It has style.”

With the Anna Wintour-hosted Metropolitan Museum of Art Ball just one week away, David Lauren was asked if the brand would be dressing any stars.

“Not this year,” he said, explaining, “We’ve done so much over the years, but this year we have a fashion show and we’re about to dress Team USA (for the Paris Olympics) and do a men’s fashion show in Milan. So our plate is full.”
