Gyöngyvér Bognár Mari Jászai award-winning actress started a new life in America with her husband, director János Szász.
Gyöngyvér Bognár moved to America
The family moved to America four years ago, after director János Szász’s house was searched by the police following the release of his documentary about Siamese twins in Bangladesh. Half a year later, he moved to Washington with his wife and two sons in the hope of a better future and a better life.
– I originally signed up to clean. It never occurred to me that I could get a full-time job as a kindergarten teacher. I don’t even have the qualifications and I don’t speak English well. But it doesn’t bother the children at all, they are happy to explain, and they are extremely receptive – quotes the Glance Gyöngyvér Bognár For Hungarian Orange interview he gave.
The Jászai Mari award-winning actress said that in the beginning, many people advised her not to leave her profession with thirty years of experience behind her, but she still decided to move in a completely different direction. As she said, she made this decision primarily because of her family, since as a kindergarten teacher she can spend evenings and holidays with them, while as an actress this was not a given.
His lawyer advised him not to talk in detail about why they left the country, but he did reveal that the police visited them on February 5, 2021, citing an anonymous complaint, which was followed by a process of at least two years. János Szász’s film support was also taken away, so he could no longer work as a director.
– It was hard to see what we left at home, where I can’t be. (…) Friends and relatives came to visit, and we always died a little when they left, because we didn’t know when they would come next, but later we realized that we don’t have to die, we learned to manage time – said the actress, who in 2017 her breast cancer diagnosis in 2008 made her reevaluate her life.
– The United States is not my country. Hungary gave us roots, America gave us wings, and this country loves talent. My younger son didn’t speak a word of English, but since September he has been going to the school library, taking out books that have caught his attention, so they have loaded his laptop with things he might be interested in. They immediately notice the one who is better at something and support him – said Gyöngyvér Bognár.
It also turned out that her husband, János Szász, initially earned his living by delivering food, but later he got a great opportunity to work as a director in the play Angels in America, which was later nominated in 12 categories for a relevant professional award.
