President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized that his American counterpart Joe Biden has not yet responded to the decalogue of proposals that he made a few months ago to address the migration phenomenon, where one of the proposals is that the United States invest 20 billion dollars in nations of the region to address the causes that generate the phenomenon.
He stressed that Mexico invests more resources than Washington in social programs in Latin American and Caribbean nations to prevent migration.
“A fact, we are investing 150 million dollars for social programs in the countries where there is more migration, we contribute more to those countries than what the United States contributes.”
He reiterated that for Mexico “it means an investment, which I do not spend, of 3.5 billion dollars, to address the migration phenomenon.”
When asked in the morning whether the head of the White House had already responded to his proposals on immigration matters, the president lamented: “There has been no response.”
López Obrador said that in his opinion, “it seems like a lot of what (the US) is allocating to wars, but not what it is allocating to development.”
And he emphasized: “Don’t tell me that it is little, because they have just authorized 90 billion dollars for Ukraine and for what is happening in the Middle East,” he added.
In the decalogue, López Obrador also calls for the regularization of 5 million Mexican migrants who have been living and working honestly in the United States for more than five years; suspend sanctions on Venezuela to reduce migratory flows; lift the blockade on Cuba and not hinder its development; maintain the program for receiving migrants through legal channels, implemented by the current United States government.
Other proposals are not to build walls or close the border, because it does not solve the causes of migration or solve the problem: It is pure electoral political propaganda, among others.
He acknowledged that in 2019, given the pressure of the establishment of tariffs on Mexican goods by the then US president, Donald Trump, he had to “choose between inconveniences”, and his administration decided to reinforce its southern border with the presence of the National Guard to contain the flow of irregular migrants.
