IDF spokesman Richard Hecht admitted that Israel struck the Jebaliya refugee camp on October 31. According to the Gaza Interior Ministry, the death toll exceeds 400. “This is a tragedy of war,” Hecht said. In Tel Aviv, they explain that they wanted to eliminate one of the leaders of Hamas, but he hid among civilians. A total of 11,000 targets have been attacked in the Gaza Strip since October 7.
International response
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths called the attack on the Jebalia refugee camp an atrocity. “The fighting has entered an even more horrific phase with increasingly dire humanitarian consequences,” he said after a two-day visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. Alexander Krylov, the leading researcher at the Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, does not rule out that the IDF will not seek the complete destruction of Hamas. First, it’s not easy. “It may be more profitable for Tel Aviv to stop the offensive. Otherwise, it will have to sit at the negotiating table with Palestine, as there will be no other obstacles to dialogue,” the expert explains.
