Olly Alexander is delighted with the other participants in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. In the British radio program ‘The Rebecca Judd Show’, the singer said that it is a ‘strong year’, in which ‘a lot of great artists’ are participating. Olly Alexander is participating this year on behalf of the United Kingdom with the song ‘Dizzy’.
“Participation is enough for me”
“I love the Spanish entry, Nebulossa. And I love the Ukrainian girls, Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil,” he says. The ‘Years & Years’ singer, who is friends with Irish actor Bambie Thug, names up-and-coming Swiss artist Nemo as his favorite to win. “I think that one will win. It’s so good.” Other partners he names are Silvester (Lithuania), Luna (Poland) and Mustii from Belgium. “There are also a lot of great LGBTQ acts, which is great to see.”
Olly doesn’t see himself as a top contender, but he’ll put in a performance he’s proud of. “Participation is enough for me,” he explains. “Obviously I want to do well and I especially want to do myself proud, but I also want to do Britain proud. But you never know what will happen.”
The United Kingdom, as one of the so-called Big 5 countries, does not have to qualify for the final in the semi-finals. Unlike previous years, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and host nation Sweden will play in the semi-finals this year. With this decision, the ESF group is giving each country the opportunity to present their song to the public before the final.
