Constitución Avenue was the meeting point for various organizations that represent the social, labor and union struggle, in Seville, Spain, during May 1, International Labor Day.
Better working and salary conditions are one of the main demands that the organizations have made in a brief peaceful manner.
Juan Bautista Gines, general secretary of UGT, Andalusia, emphasized that it is time to advance in labor and social challenges, where it is also urgent to denounce the situations of precariousness and poverty in which many people live, who in the 21st century do not have sustenance to eat.
Currently, there are around 21 million workers affiliated with Social Security in Seville, of which more than 10 million are women.
“We do not want workers to earn 20% less because they are women, we do not want young people to emigrate because they do not have employment opportunities, young people being the most prepared in this decade, we also demand an end to cases of femicides” Gines noted.
The UGT explains that cases of layoffs cannot continue to occur at the convenience of companies, since this represents a strong impact on families, especially in the area of the food basket.
The union leader added that the high costs of food only benefit the food chains, at the expense of the working class, where they daily “plunge” farmers, producers, workers into misery.
“We have to continue fighting, because the minimum wage is the law for everyone and must be complied with, as must the law on the prevention of Occupational Risks, which is often not complied with, causing the death of our workers,” explained Juan Bautista Gines.
The UGT denounces that there are many workers who go to work and do not return alive, because they do not put safety measures in their workplaces.
The UGT called on the corresponding bodies to correctly distribute labor inspectors according to the needs of each province, this because they do not have control of the labor market, with which work accidents could be avoided.
During the rally, the organizations took the opportunity to extend their solidarity to people in conflict situations, including the Sahrawi People, Cuba and Palestine.
“Yesterday 51 people died, after 10 days traveling in a canoe, searching for the Canary Islands in order to have a better life,” reported Carlos Aristu, General Secretary of the UGT Workers’ Commissions.
“To the Sahrawi people, who after decades of exile, are demonstrating today, longing to return to the place from where they never had to be expelled, also to the millions of men and women of Cuba who today, early in the morning, occupy the main streets of the city. , in a context of more than 60 years, of a cruel economic, commercial, financial and diplomatic blockade and the people of Palestine who have been suffering for decades before the governments of Israel and the blindness of the international community, where today they suffer a genocide televised, long live the struggle of the people of Palestine! Recognize the sovereign State of Palestine now,” he concluded.
