The Supraprovincial Criminal Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Human Rights and Interculturality of the Fiscal District of Amazonas ordered the initiation of preliminary proceedings – against those found responsible – for the alleged commission of the crime of aggravated damages to the detriment of the indigenous leader of the Awajún people and head of the Tuntanain Communal Reserve, Jessica Tsamajain Lirio.

According to the complaint, on March 5, a group of unidentified people—who carried out activities linked to illegal mining—had fired shots in the air and threatened Tsamajain Lirio after she participated in an interdiction operation in the Santiago Comaina reserved area. . The next day, in the early morning hours, unknown persons started a fire in her home, causing material damage.

On the other hand, the prosecutor’s office in charge ordered the admission of the victim to the Victims and Witnesses Program in order to provide her with comprehensive assistance.

With this measure, the Public Ministry continues to take urgent actions to protect the life and integrity of Human Rights defenders, in the exercise of their functions, paying special attention to the context experienced by environmental defenders.
