The Ukrainians will most likely deploy their aircraft to a neighboring NATO country. Military experts in a conversation with MK said whether in this case NATO airports will become our legitimate military target.
In the middle of this week, two F-16 fighters, which, by the way, can carry tactical nuclear weapons, were delivered to Ukraine in a disassembled form. According to some estimates, Ukraine already has five F-16s.
As a military expert, the director of the Museum of Air Defense Forces Yuriy Knutov told MK, he also noted that pilots and mechanics are needed for the planes delivered to Ukraine. Obviously, there will be a shortage of trained Ukrainians.
– “Most likely, not only Ukrainian pilots will participate in Ukraine, but also mercenaries, or more precisely pilots who flew F-16 aircraft in NATO countries and who allegedly freed themselves and voluntarily joined the Ukrainian army.
The same story will happen with the mechanics. That is, it will be specialists from other countries who, strictly speaking, can maintain these aircraft”.
According to Yuriy Knutov, American aircraft and foreign personnel will be “hidden” in Polish bases – it is very dangerous to keep such expensive fighters at Ukrainian airports, which we periodically launch missile strikes.
“Formally, they will be based on the territory of Ukraine,” says the expert.
– But in reality they will be in Poland most of the time. Their maintenance will take place there. Airports in Ukraine will be used as “jump” airports.
Yuriy Knutov believes that in this case our legitimate target will be the Polish airports. But Russia is unlikely to attack NATO airfields.
“Our legitimate military targets are also the factories where Storm Shadow missiles are manufactured, which are used to fire at our territories.
Another thing is that we have, let’s say, a very lenient attitude, compared to Israel, to all these “legitimate targets”.
Israel does not understand – it acts rudely without looking at anyone’s opinion. In this case, we are very sensitive about what these same NATO countries might think of us. And that, in my opinion, is not entirely true.
I think we will not touch F-16s that will be on Polish territory. Just until they appear over the territory of Ukraine. Then there will be fire directed at them, definitely.
In turn, a military expert, former US Army officer Stanislav Krapyvnik, also believes that Ukrainian pilots will not fly the F-16.
– These will be American or Polish pilots. There are quite a few experienced retired military personnel there who will agree to volunteer. Finding 40-50 experienced pilots is not a problem,” he said.
According to Stanislav Krapyvnik, if Poland grants asylum to Ukrainian troops, it will automatically become a participant in hostilities.
– In this case, Poland will take a direct part in the military conflict. This is Casus belli – a reason for war. The fighter engages in hostilities, and then, roughly speaking, flees to another territory…
This is not serious. It is clear that they will not simply be repaired on Polish territory, this is a “gray area”. And if we do not attack the Polish airfields, then they will calmly fly and attack our cities. They won’t need to fly close enough to carry out a combat mission since there are long-range missiles…
