Opposition senators ratify request for impeachment against Zaldívar

Mexico City. A group of opposition senators went this Thursday to the general secretariat of the Chamber of Deputies to ratify the request for impeachment that was presented yesterday against retired minister Arturo Zaldívar Lelo de Larrea, for the alleged commission of crimes such as bribery, diversion of resources, abuse of functions and hidden enrichment.

Shortly after 11 in the morning, senators from PRI and PAN arrived in San Lázaro to continue the process that began on Wednesday and stressed that the intention of the process is to disqualify Zaldívar as a public servant for up to 20 years, if found guilty.

“That Minister Zaldívar has summoned judges and magistrates on the 14th floor of the Judiciary Council, while he was in office, being president of the Court, to force them to issue sentences in favor of the government, is evidently illegal and is also immoral. “, emphasized Kenia López Rabadán (PAN).

The senator stressed that “we have heard how the President of the Republic declared publicly and even cynically that the minister ‘helped’ them. This, of course, is illegal, and we are requesting that the deputies begin this process with the clear and public intention that, if these illegalities are proven, this use of power from the presidency of former Minister Zaldívar, he can be sanctioned. ”.

As reported in this newspaper, the complaint from the opposition senators states that, in addition to the alleged network of corruption and pressure on judges and magistrates to resolve cases that were of interest to the Executive, Zaldívar joined the presidential campaign of Claudia Sheinbaum on the same day she submitted her request to retire from office, and a week before the Senate approved her resignation.

When questioned about the impeachment complaint that Zaldívar and the national leadership of Morena announced that they will in turn present against the minister-president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Piña Hernández, López Rabadán expressed his support for the togada

“She is an intelligent, upright, ethical woman. She is a woman who, in the face of the violence exercised from the National Palace by (President Andrés Manuel) López Obrador, does not shrink, on the contrary: she demonstrates authority in a power that must be autonomous and independent.

The difference between Piña and Zaldívar, he added, is that the latter “from the Judiciary wanted to help López Obrador in terms of ideological subordination and power, and that is a shame for the minister who today clearly and shamelessly, without limits, Without ethics, without morals, he has become a rattlesnake of López Obrador’s corcholata,” he said in reference to the Morenoist presidential candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum.

For her part, PRI senator Claudia Anaya Mota stated that “what they (the Morenistas) bring against the minister-president of the SCJN is anger, because she is a decent woman who has known how to safeguard with dignity the division of powers, something that Zaldívar did not do this by abandoning his position as minister and becoming a cheerleader for the official candidate.”

When asked if they expected their impeachment request to be attended to “urgently,” Manuel Añorve Baños (PRI) said that the opposition senators “are presenting (the complaint) in a timely manner; Obviously it is up to the Chamber of Deputies to set the pace.”

-There are dozens of pending trials here and everything indicates that the sleep of the righteous is going to sleep…

-That does not prevent us from presenting it. We have to present it. We see real possibilities that it will be attended to, she responded.

As in all cases requesting impeachment, the complaint against the minister must be analyzed in order of priority, that is, the more than 400 files that are pending resolution must first be resolved.
