Venezuela: Machado announces his retirement and presents Corina Yoris as his replacement for the presidential elections

The unity opposition candidate for the presidential elections in Venezuela, María Corina Machado, has announced her withdrawal and has presented Dr. Corina Yoris, who was a member of the National Primary Commission (CNP), as her replacement for the elections. in which the opposition will face Chavismo.

«We have found a person of my complete confidence, honorable; “that she is going to complete this process with the support and trust of everyone,” she announced in a press conference, describing her successor as a person with an “impeccable attitude” and “transparent.”

Machado recalled that “the law establishes that up to ten days before the election there can be a substitution” of candidate and has specified that the decision has been made with the consensus of the entire Unitary Platform.

This occurs after Machado denounced that neither the Venezuelan opposition party Manuel Rosales, Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), nor Democratic Unity could access the system to register their candidacy with the National Electoral Council (CNE).

From this Thursday until next Monday, March 25, the deadline to present candidates will be open. On the part of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), it has already been confirmed that its representative will once again be the current president, Nicolás Maduro.

The Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office announced this week the arrest of Dignora Hernández, political coordinator of Machado’s campaign, and the national coordinator of Vente Venezuela, Henry Alviarez, for allegedly orchestrating a plan to “destabilize the country.” He also issued arrest warrants for seven other key figures in the party leadership.

Maduro came to power in 2013 and will be the official candidate for the presidential elections next July in which he will seek a third term. The opposition chose Machado in primaries as a unitary candidate, but it is unknown if he will finally participate due to a fifteen-year disqualification confirmed by the Supreme Court.
