Ecuador announced this Monday that it sued Mexico before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague for granting asylum to former vice president Jorge Glas, investigated for corruption, and interfering in internal affairs, the Foreign Ministry reported.
“The Agent of Ecuador presented at the International Court of Justice the lawsuit of Ecuador against Mexico, for Mexico’s violations of a series of international obligations, for the conduct of that country since December 17, 2023,” when Glas took refuge in the diplomatic legation, the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.
Ecuador’s decision responds to an initial complaint filed by Mexico before The Hague in which it accused the Andean country of having transgressed the inviolable nature of diplomatic headquarters by invading its embassy in Quito on April 5 to arrest Glas, who also has German nationality, who was subject to an arrest warrant and preventive detention. The ICJ plans to hear the arguments of both countries in this case, which has provoked statements of condemnation in CELAC, the IACHR and even the EU, starting tomorrow, Tuesday.
In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador explained that it also denounces alleged interference in internal affairs when in the previous days López Obrador linked the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio with the electoral victory of President Daniel Noboa over Correísta candidate Luisa González . Noboa, for his part, said he did not regret having ordered the arrest of Glas, against whom there was a preventive detention order.
Ecuador’s lawsuit asks the International Court to declare that Mexico “has failed to comply with its obligations to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State, not to interfere in the internal affairs of the receiving State, and not to use mission premises in a manner incompatible with “the functions of the diplomatic mission, in accordance with article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.”
