2 May 2015: 10 hours after her birth, the princess is presented to the world in the arms of mother Kate (in a red dress, like Lady Diana at the birth of her son Harry) and with father William at her side. Nine years later, Charlotte celebrates 9 years in the family, although it is not a peaceful moment for her and her brothers, due to the treatment that mother Kate is facing for her cancer. There will be a cake and a small party for her at home. While waiting to see the new portraits of her posted for her birthday, we’ll tell you 12 things you (maybe) don’t know about her.
1) He has a nickname, or rather two
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Mountbatten-Windsor: this is the full name of the daughter of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Although we know the princess by her birth name, she is called more informally in her family and at school. Her nickname is “Lottie” for mother Kate and her friends, while father William has a term all her own; was revealed in 2022, when the Cambridge family visited Kate’s Back to Nature garden at the Chelsea Flower Show: “Mignonette”, which is French for carina.
2) His first word
It arrived almost “live”, during a public event. Exactly during William and Kate’s tour of Canada, in September 2016, when the princess was 16 months old; The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s family was attending a children’s party, and when Charlotte saw some balloons she couldn’t contain her excitement, she ran shakily towards them exclaiming “Pop!”.
3) Charlotte loves gymnastics
The princess is quite active and like mother Kate loves sports. During her parents’ tour of Ireland, the then Duchess of Cambridge revealed that her daughter in particular has a passion for gymnastics: “Charlotte really loves gymnastics, she does cartwheels, handstands, everything. It’s great for training basic balance and coordination skills”.
4) He loves animals
When Charlotte arrived home – at Kensington Palace – in addition to two brothers there was a dog, Lupo, who became the mascot of the three little princes. In 2020 their beloved Cocker Spaniel left them, and so they got a new puppy from Uncle James’ kennel: a female called Orla.
5) She has a passion in common with her late great-grandmother the Queen
In 2016, during a meeting with Paralympic gold medalist Natasha Baker, Kate spoke about her daughter, saying that “Charlotte has a passion for horses” and that she would “do her best to support and encourage her”. The princess started riding (or rather, riding a pony) when she was only 17 months old.
6) .. and one in common with his maternal grandmother, Carole
During an interview with the magazine Saga, maternal grandmother, Carole Middleton, revealed that she enjoys gardening with her grandchildren: “If I’m planting with my grandchildren, I like to have everything neatly laid out on the ‘workbenches,’ including small trowel and pots, so that they can begin immediately.” And she added: “It is important that children grow up appreciating nature; for this to be the case they must be allowed to … get muddy a little.”
7) Charlotte speaks Spanish
Thanks not to the school, but to her nanny: Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo is Spanish and teaches her language to the little princes since they are little. A source revealed to People that Charlotte speaks her quite well: she’s “very sweet and very confident, always chatting,” she said. Before adding that she Charlotte is also “very polite, but also fun and energetic.”
8) He has a sense of humor like his great-grandfather Filippo
It was Prince William who said that his daughter has a certain sense of humor during an event he attended in the West Midlands: “When someone asks her age”, the prince said, “she says she is 16” . Other times instead: “Charlotte says: I’m six years old now, I’ll do what I want.” More than humor, it seems that Charlotte has a good temper.
9) She likes to snack on something strange..
The princess likes to snack on raw peas: strange but true. Charlotte’s grandmother, Camilla, told it. During a school visit to Slough, England, the then Duchess of Cornwall told students that the Princess likes to pick peas and eat them straight from the pod when she picks them from her garden. “I take all my grandchildren out to the garden and they spend hours eating peas,” she revealed.
10) Charlotte cooks for her mother
During a visit to Lavender Primary School, Duchess Kate told Matthew Kleiner-Mann that her children love to cook for her: “She was telling us how much her children love to cook and how they cook for her. The other day they made pasta with cheese: one mixes the flour, one puts the milk and butter. They also prepare salads and things like that.”
11) She loves something that not even a princess can have
[[ge:rep-locali:content-hub:422778032]]
Like many children of his age, he is fascinated by unicorns. During a visit to Harcombe House in Devon, the Duke of Cambridge joined an art therapy session and noticed a work of art – a unicorn horn – in the room, so he said: “My daughter loves unicorns. He loves them. Very nice!”. Charlotte also has a unicorn keychain hanging from her school backpack and a unicorn bag, which she carried with her when she was younger while she watched her father play polo.
12) She likes braids
On special occasions, the princess is always perfectly coiffed. It is no coincidence that in the portraits she instead has her hair down: full freedom, when possible. Among the hairstyles, he prefers braids, but his father William doesn’t do them… in the past he has joked about this, describing his limitations when it comes to hairstyles: “Never try to do a ponytail, it’s a nightmare”, he said jokingly during an official visit to Blackpool. His wife pressed him, saying, “Have you tried braiding? It’s hard,” and he said, “I can do Charlotte’s ponytail, but that’s about it. I don’t have enough hair to practice,” he said jokingly.
