The Areio Pagos block to the Spartans for the European elections seems to be providing developments for the party’s seats in the Greek Parliament.
The Areopagites in their decision are clear that the real leader of the Spartans and the one who pulled the strings and gave orders to the elected deputies is Ilias Kasidiaris, who was convicted of running a criminal organization. In fact, the judges in their decision emphasize that many of the current Spartan MPs used to participate in Golden Dawn.
Following this development, it is considered a given that the Electoral Court will decide the disqualification of the Spartan MPs – regardless of whether they remain or have resigned from the parliamentary group -, even before the European elections. The most likely scenario is that the twelve seats elected by the Spartans in June will be redistributed to the other parties. ND will probably get six seats, SYRIZA three, PASOK one, KKE one and Pleussi Eleftherias one.
Of course, there is also the possibility of repeat elections in the twelve regions to fill the vacant seats. These are the 1st Athens, 2nd Piraeus, North, West and South sectors of 2nd Athens, Eastern Attica, Aitoloakarnania, Heraklion, 1st and 2nd Thessaloniki, Achaia and Larissa. This scenario currently does not seem to have many chances, while there are not a few who do not rule out Kyriakos Mitsotakis pulling a surprise and calling an election.
Unthinkable scenes
The father of the former MP of the Spartans Konstantinos Floros, who in the past was an executive of the Hellenic Solution, filed a lawsuit against Kyriakos Velopoulos because he believes he is behind a profile on Twitter that has cursed him. During the plenary debate, where it was decided to lift the immunity of Mr. Velopoulos, Con. Floros in the corridors of the Parliament quarreled and punched the MP of the Hellenic Solution Vassilis Grammenos, who was taken to the hospital with a broken nose.
The MP elected with the Spartans claimed in his apology that he did not hit B. Grammenos but tried to… push him away. The cause and occasion, according to everything he says, was the behavior of the member of the Hellenic Solution who cursed his mother in a vulgar way.
Obviously, one would not expect anything better from extreme right-wingers who were proven to have entered the Parliament with the help of Kasidiaris. But we would certainly expect the government, on the one hand, not to allow the criminal Kasidiaris to campaign from prison, and on the other hand, to have taken the appropriate legislative initiatives to keep neo-Nazis out of electoral processes.
