USA: Threat of expulsion to students who occupied a Columbia University building – 2024-05-01 16:06:54

New York’s Columbia University, which for two weeks has been at the center of a student anti-war movement for the Palestinian cause, today threatened to expel those who have occupied one of the campus buildings since last night.

“We regret that the protesters chose the path of escalation with their actions(…). Students who occupied the building face the risk of expulsion,” Columbia spokesman Ben Chang said in a statement.

“We said clearly yesterday that the functioning of the university cannot be permanently disrupted by protesters breaking the rules. Continuing this (course of action) will certainly have consequences,” Chang stressed in his statement, accusing the squatters of “vandalizing, breaking doors and windows, and blocking entrances” to the building.
