Ukrainian forces defending the strategic eastern city of Chasov Yar from intensifying Russian attacks say they are still waiting for new weapons after the United States approved a major aid package military, Reuters reported.
The Russian army is advancing west of the city of Avdeevka that was captured in February and has reached the outskirts of Chasov Yar, another important objective that will allow it to attack other cities from there. Oleg Shiryaev, commander of the 225th separate assault battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is fighting near Chasov Yar, said that additional shells would help hold the positions.
“I hope we get artillery shells soon,” he said, speaking from a commanding officer outside the city. He also said that the supply of weapons from the Allies had been able to bring about significant changes on the battlefield in the past.
“I saw events last year when [частната военна компания – бел.ред.] “Wagner” was making progress. We received a cluster munition that changed the situation a lot and we were able to fight back successfully,” he said, adding that soldiers with additional training and long-range weapons would help the Ukraine to defend itself effectively.
Casualties have been high on both sides since Russia invaded in early 2022, but with its much larger army and more weapons and ammunition, Russia is gaining the upper hand on the eastern Ukraine, where the strongest fighting is going on. Shiryaev is confident that Russian forces will not enter Chasov Yar until May 9, when Russia celebrates World War II Victory Day. Some Ukrainian officials said Moscow might want to seize the city in time for the deadline. The commander said his troops had recently acquired more armored vehicles and drones, which had reduced logistics, including his battalion’s ability to evacuate wounded soldiers.
