According to Tiina Parika, the authorities and decision-makers do not understand what leaking information on the internet really does to an individual person.
- The victims of the data breach at the office are relieved by Aleksanteri Kivimäki’s sentence.
- Kivimäki was sentenced to six years and three months in prison.
- The victims hope that the authorities and decision-makers would learn from the Vastaamo case.
Justice was served, rejoice Tiina Parikka his experiences after the verdict on Vastaamo’s data breach. He is one of the 33,000 victims of the data breach.
The district court of Länsi Uusimaa sentenced on Tuesday Aleksanteri Tomminpoika Kivimäki six years and three months in prison. The conviction was for aggravated data breach, attempted aggravated blackmail, 9,231 aggravated dissemination of information infringing private life, 20,745 attempted aggravated blackmail and 20 aggravated blackmail. The crimes took place between 2018 and 2020.
The judgment is not binding.
Parikka was listening in the early stages of the trial, when the prosecutor presented the evidence collected by the police during the preliminary investigation.
– It was so comprehensive that the defendant’s defenses seemed ridiculous.
Another victim of a data breach Ari Niemelä is on the same line as Parika.
– Sounds really good. At least he was convicted. There was a possibility that he would have escaped like a dog from the ring, Niemelä thought to Iltalehte after hearing about Kivimäki’s sentence.
The compensation is surprising
Petteri Paalasmaa
In Kivimäki’s judgment, Parikka is surprised by the compensations. The victims’ claims for compensation were not processed in court, as is usually the case in criminal proceedings.
Lawyers for hundreds of victims told during the legal process that Kivimäki has made a settlement agreement for compensation, which applies to some of the victims. The district court took this into account as a mitigating factor when measuring Kivimäki’s sentence.
Parikka is surprised by this.
– As if he had taken the initiative in this matter of compensation.
Parikka is one of those who have applied for compensation from Kivimäki. He does not say the amount, but describes it as “ridiculously small”.
– And Kivimäki doesn’t have to pay us a cent. Yes, it is a treasury that pays if it pays.
The leak was shocking
Parika and Niemelä’s torment began in October 2020, when they received an email extorting money from them by threatening to leak their therapy information online. Their information was also leaked online.
It was a shock for both of them.
– It feels absolutely terrible that my most personal information can somehow be trampled and trampled on in the market, Parikka said in October 2023.
– I had panic attacks. I also went to health care about it, but I didn’t really get any help, Niemelä said a year earlier.
After the blackmail message, both started doing everything they could to protect their personal information. Both of them, among other things, acquire a self-imposed credit ban. Both also wish that the authorities had supported the victims of the data breach more during the process.
Leak anti-therapy
Ari Niemelä’s home album
In the case of Niemelä, the securing of personal data seems to have been successful. Disruptors have not called his phone number and he has not received scam messages that used his leaked information.
It has also calmed the mind.
– It comes to mind every once in a while, but not so often anymore.
However, he admits that the leaking of information caused “a little resistance to therapy”.
– I don’t feel like going a second time.
In Parika, the situation is different. Two and a half years after the blackmail message, he received a blackmail message with his social security number and an invitation to log in to the Suomi.fi website. The police investigated the case as an attempted fraud, but the investigation was stopped in the early stages.
Potential victims
Parikka and Niemelä hope that the authorities and decision-makers will learn from Vastaamo’s data breach and data leakage.
– But where are the decision-makers who would do something for the victims? asks Parikka.
At the top of both wish lists is the option to change your personal ID.
– It has been said that it is so difficult. People have initially decided on the personal identification number, yes, they should also be able to decide on changing it. It has been this month too! The couple is convulsing.
According to him, the authorities and decision-makers do not understand what leaking information on the Internet really does to an individual person.
– We are potential victims for the rest of our lives.
