MADRID, 26 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, condemned this Monday the murder of the mayor of the San Vicente canton, in Manabí, Brigitte García, and the head of municipal communication, Jairo Loor, within the framework of a state of emergency decreed by the Ecuadorian president, Daniel Noba, to stop the spiral of violence.
«(Guterres) strongly condemns the murder of the mayor of Saint Vincent, Brigitte García, and her partner Jairo Loor. “He sends his deepest condolences to the families and people of Saint Vincent,” said his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, in a press conference.
Likewise, the Secretary General has “taken note” of the measures adopted by the authorities to stop the wave of violence and has recalled that these “efforts” must comply with International Law, in line with Ecuador’s long-standing commitment to the rule of law.
García was attacked by alleged hitmen in the early hours of Sunday on a beach known as Punta Napo to which she had traveled in a vehicle. Her body was found around 1:00 a.m. by a person who works in a motorcycle taxi and it was he who alerted the authorities.
Afterwards, the former presidential candidate of Revolución Ciudadana, Luisa González, lamented the murder, appearing “in shock” since “no one is safe in Ecuador” while “the miserable right-wing governments only live on party and show.” The Ecuadorian Government affirmed that it will not lower its “guard” in the fight against terrorism.
