Bombassei: “Confindustria now needs a guide that brings credibility”

TORINO – “We need to regain the representativeness of the Italian industry. We need a real, credible entrepreneur.” Word of Alberto Bombassei, president emeritus of Brembo, former number one of Federmeccanica, twice vice-president of Confindustria with responsibility for industrial relations, first with Montezemolo and then with Marcegaglia, and then candidate for the leadership of Viale dell’Astronomia, narrowly beaten by Giorgio Squinzi.

Bombassei, we are halfway through the tortuous path that will lead to the renewal of the presidency of Confindustria. What does the association representing Italian industrialists need today?

“One thing above all: regaining the representativeness of Italian industry. From the small one that is the backbone of our country, to the districts that are our characteristic of resilience, up to the unfortunately not many large multinational industries. However, the latter must be able to inspire the growth and innovation of processes and products throughout Italian manufacturing”.

What are the three characteristics that the future president must have?

“Stature and competence, personal and of a true entrepreneur, which makes him credible towards both national and European institutions. And then the ability to bring together an equally strong and authoritative presidential team together with a general manager who responds in full harmony to the needs of the members, who are the shareholders of Confindustria. Last but not least, as a third element, I would add the provenance from an industrial manufacturing sector which is currently in transition towards the high digitalisation of processes”.

In short, does Confindustria need to regain its authority?

“On this point I am in complete agreement with Luca di Montezemolo: Confindustria serves, not uses. Montezemolo’s presidential team, of which I was part, was a good example in this sense. Authoritativeness also means the ability to delegate and to control that the delegation itself achieves the pre-established results. We men and women of complex companies do this every day in Italy and around the world and we are a possible point of reference for those like us who want to grow in an increasingly challenging world. Before becoming large, our companies were small.”

Much depends on what politics does. How do you judge the industrial strategies of the Meloni government?

“There is an astral combination that must be used well. The various ministries ask the industrial sectors what they need, both in Italy and above all in Europe, which today is the source of most of the regulations that we then apply at a national level. In my sector I appreciated the harmony that has been created with the government on the Euro 7 issue and on other dossiers, as well as on the automotive table, which is an original approach and probably useful for the country. We must therefore support the government with concrete and feasible proposals.”

Returning to Confindustria, what do you think of the controversy between the Association and the president of Federacciai, Antonio Gozzi, for his exclusion from the race?

“I would not speak of controversy, but of a legitimate request for greater clarity on such important decisions as the exclusion of a strong and authoritative candidate from a fair competition for the presidency. Our common home gains in authority the more clear and transparent it is in its decision-making processes, and it seems to me we have a long way to go on this. To be clear: in a board of directors of one of our companies, which is the correspondent of the General Council of our Confindustria, information and explanations received yesterday from me too would not be considered sufficient to motivate important decisions”.

Two candidates remain in play, Edoardo Garrone and Emanuele Orsini. Who do you choose?

“I don’t express myself personally, I respect and respect those who make themselves available to the association. However, I believe it is right to remember that a large part of Italian manufacturing has indicated this clearly and transparently and according to the established rules. And that’s what has disappeared so far.”
