The European Commission and national regulators are asking twenty airlines to change false sustainability claims.
The companies now have one month to prove or change their green claims. If this does not happen, sanctions may follow, says the Dutch Consumer and Markets Authority, the supervisory authority.
No explanation
The ACM says it came across several applications:
- the use of the term ‘sustainable fuel’ without defining what is sustainable about it.
- Proposes that aviation carbon emissions can be offset by paying extra for carbon offset projects.
- use of overall sustainability claims such as ‘green’ and ‘responsible’.
- claims that society is on the path to carbon neutrality without clear and defined targets.
Green claims are often a marketing practice. That is called ‘Grewashing’. NOS op 3 made this video about:
Durable or just expensive? This is a wash lock
“Flying is and still is a polluting mode of transport,” says Catautje Hijmans van den Bergh of the ACM. “Companies need to be honest and clear in their communication about their sustainability efforts.
It has not been announced which companies are involved. “It has been decided not to mention the names at this stage,” said an ACM spokesperson.
Download the law on KLM
Last month, the judge ruled that KLM fake green applications did. For example, with slogans like “Step by step towards a sustainable future”, KLM did not specify what steps the company took on the way there.
Since KLM no longer uses the offending ads, the company did not have to make corrections from the judge.
