Mexico asks the UN for Palestine to be a “full” member

Mexico yesterday reaffirmed its support for Palestine to be a full member of the United Nations (UN) and demanded that the Security Council live up to its responsibility to avoid a generalization of war in the Middle East.

The Mexican representative before the international organization, Héctor Vasconcelos, participated in the open debate of the Security Council on the Middle East, in which he pointed out that Mexico is convinced that we still have time to avoid a generalized conflict in the region.

He expressed that the Mexican government is extremely concerned about the military actions that in the recent month have led to a dangerous rise in tensions and emphasized the call to the parties to definitively and permanently cease hostilities, especially indiscriminate attacks against the civilian population, as well as against medical and humanitarian personnel.

Mexico demanded from the Security Council meet the expectations of the vast majority of member states that want peacefor which he stated that it is imperative end the suffering of the Palestinian population in Gaza.

Vasconcelos regretted that on April 18, the Security Council did not approve the draft resolution for full membership of the State of Palestine in the organization, due to the veto of the United States.

Likewise, he endorsed Mexico’s support for a comprehensive and definitive solution to the conflict with the premise of two States, which addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns and allows the consolidation of a Palestinian State, politically and economically viable, that coexists with Israel within of secure and internationally recognized borders.
