According to all indications, the number of Greek citizens inside or outside the State who will exercise their electoral right in the June 9th European referendum by postal vote will reach (or will be slightly below) 200,000.
The electronic platform for registration in the postal voting lists “locks” after midnight on Monday, April 29, 2024.
Until the last moment, voters inside and outside the Greek territory were “running” to meet the deadline to submit a request to participate in the European elections through postal voting. It is typical that, according to information from the Ministry of the Interior, around 6 pm on Monday, a few hours before the digital application was deactivated, a total of 190,382 Greek voters from 127 different countries had registered on the epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr platform. Of these, the majority (75.2%) declare an address for sending election materials to Greece (143,210 voters), while 24.8% concern voters who live or will be outside Greece on the day of the European elections (47,172 voters from abroad). Don’t forget that Greek residents abroad can exercise their right to vote in the upcoming European elections exclusively through postal voting.
Based on the data collected, the largest number of registrations on the postal voting platform, about six hours before the deadline, mainly concerns four countries: Germany with 8,756 registered, the United Kingdom with 8,315, the USA with 3,613, Belgium with 3,233 and the Netherlands with 2,849. The Ministry of the Interior makes special mention of the fact that among those registered are Greek voters abroad, who had not voted in the 2023 national elections, as there was no polling station in the country or near their area of residence. Such cases include, among others, the American Samoa, Djibouti, Angola, Mozambique, Congo, Cambodia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Zambia.
By 16:30 on Holy Monday, a total of 188,511 Greeks from 127 different countries had registered. 141,637 (percentage 75.1%) are residents within the territory, while 46,874 (percentage 24.9%) Greeks abroad.
Of the Greeks abroad, 39,608 registrations come from Europe (84.5%), 477 (10.2%) from North and Central America, 979 (2.1%) from Asia, 453 (1%) from Africa, 226 (0.5%) from South America and 832 (1.8%) from Oceania.
The number of registered expatriate voters is significantly higher than in the 2023 general election, for which nearly 23,000 were registered to vote in person, with around 18,000 going to the polls in May and 15,600 in June.
It is recalled that registrations are carried out through the application epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr, which is accessible through gov.gr and the websites of the ministries of interior and foreign affairs.
