World Health Organization Launches “Patient Safety Bill of Rights” at Global Summit

On April 18, 2024 World Health Organization or World Health Organization (WHO) launched “Patient Safety Bill of Rights” At the 6th Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety in Santiago, Chile.

This constitution deals with the rights of patients in relation to safety. and encourage all parties involved in this Constitution to use it to develop laws, policies and guidelines to ensure patient safety in their countries.

“Patient safety” refers to the processes, procedures and culture that occur in a health system. which supports the creation of safety Reduce the risk of harm to patients when they receive services. Ready to rest on that principle Everyone has the right to access safe health care according to global human rights standards. No discrimination based on sex, age, race or ethnicity, language, religion, physical disability. economic or other status

Patient safety is an important element in realizing the right to health. This is especially true when 1 in 10 patients worldwide experience damage to their health services, even though 50% of this damage is avoidable.

This damage can result from errors in services such as unsafe surgical procedures. Dosing errors Misdiagnosis or delays Unsafe injection or blood transfusion techniques and life-threatening infections

This problem is considered a global obstacle. Because it happens in many countries without having to do with income levels. and the level of health services Most of the damage is not caused by a single factor. Rather, it is caused by the failure of processes in an inadequately designed health system.

“Patient safety is a key principle of health services. That is to prevent damage to the patient. which is an important global agenda and is an important component necessary to achieve the goals of sustainable development.” Dr. Rudy Eggers The Director of the Office of Health Services of the World Health Organization said, adding that “Patient safety can be an indicator of a country’s commitment to respect, protect and ensure health-related human rights.”

Regarding the new Patient Safety Rights Constitution, it covers 10 main rights of access: 1) the right to access adequate, timely and effective health services 2) safe health procedures and practices 3) health knowledge and competence; Safe medical products 5) Safe medical facilities

6) Respectful service Do not discriminate, do not discriminate, maintain patient privacy and confidentiality 7) Information and education to help patients make decisions 8) Access to medical treatment records 9) Express opinions and that you listen to them fairly and 10) patient and family involvement.

This constitution will be a tool for health professionals, leaders and governments to build a patient-centered health system. Including improving patient safety and reducing the risk of damage to health services

The constitution also includes information that patients can use to campaign to protect themselves from harm. It also encourages collaboration between patients, families, carers and communities to create a health system where everyone has the right to access safe, quality care.
