Gaps and omissions are being investigated by the Personal Data Protection Authority both in matters of safeguarding personal data by the Ministry of the Interior and in the way in which administrative and political actors handle the investigation of the leakage of personal data of voters abroad, the so-called email gate case in which the former ND MEP is involved Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou.
According to secure information from Documentonews.gr, the president of the Personal Data Protection Authority and Honorary President of the Council of State, Konstantinos Menoudakos, based on the investigation he is conducting, gave leeway to the administrative agents of the Ministry of the Interior, from the Internal Audit Unit and the Directorate of Elections as well as the Directorates of Interior and Organization, to explain in more detail aspects of the case. Until May 13, 2024, they will be able to send new memoranda with more detailed and detailed reports to the Independent Authority.
In its effort to shed light on the circumstances that led to the leak of personal data, the Authority for the Protection of Personal Data, on Monday, April 29, 2024, during the hearing of officials of the Ministry of the Interior and political actors regarding complaints about sending e-mails to Greek citizens living abroad, focused on questions that tend to identify technical distortions, security gaps or even deliberate actions for the benefit of someone or others.
In fact, it is noteworthy that the Independent Authority has decided not to use the conclusion of the Ministry of the Interior carried out by the Internal Audit Unit of the Ministry, as it is an internal document of the services there. It will not be admitted to the case file. The Authority will make use of data that it collects from its own investigation and draw up its own conclusion.
It is worth noting that as the Ministry of the Interior had announced (April 26, 2024), the Ministry’s Internal Audit Unit carried out a “full audit that resulted in an extensive conclusion”, which the Minister of the Interior Niki Kerameos and the Deputy Minister of the Interior Theodoris Livanios handed over to Head of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office and to the President of the Personal Data Protection Authority, “to facilitate their investigations”. As noted by the leadership staff of the Ministry of the Interior, a central element of the finding “is the verification, during the period of May – June 2023, of non-institutionally prescribed traffic, within the Ministry of the Interior, of personal data of Greek citizens living abroad and who had registered to vote in the parliamentary elections of 2023”.
