Sandra Doorley, the district attorney in Monroe County, New York, is under investigation and facing a lot of criticism after a video was released in which she curses and insults a police officer who stopped her for being too fast
Doorley issued an apology Monday after body camera video of the officer involved was released and Gov. New York Kathy Hochul Sunday they referred the incident to the State Fiscal Conduct Commission for review.
In the video, the prosecutor is seen confronting the officer, identified as Cameron Crisafulli by the Democrat and Chronicle, calling him “imbecile” and demanding: “Leave me alone.”
The video, obtained by WHEC of Rochester, The NBC affiliate shows that the confrontation began when the officer stopped Doorley in his garage, where he had just parked.
The officer asked him why he didn’t stop when the officer had his lights and sirens on, and Doorley admitted he was going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. She said she did not believe he was trying to stop her, insisting that other people were in the way. The police officer replied: “I was right behind you.”
During the video, the officer can be seen trying to prevent the accuser from entering the garage and at some point she responds: “I understand the law better than you. Get out of my damn house.” She said over and over that she was Monroe’s prosecutor and that she didn’t care that she was traveling fast.
“I just don’t understand my hostility. “I’m just doing my job,” Crisafulli said. She replied: “You are a hero. “I’m the Monroe County prosecutor.”
“If you give me a traffic ticket, that’s fine. I am the one who processes it. Go ahead,” the prosecutor said at another point.
The confrontation ended when Crisafulli called a supervisor and Doorley apologized, saying he had had a bad day “dealing with murders all over town.”
Apologize
Doorley also apologized in a video posted to social media, where he admitted he did not treat the officer with the respect he deserved. He said he pleaded guilty to the speeding ticket and will be investigated by another district attorney’s office.
“I have been embarrassed by my own stupidity and I am entirely to blame. I will fix it. “I’m sorry,” he said.
Governor Hochul criticized Doorley’s behavior, saying it was “in violation of his responsibility as district attorney. ” and undermines their ability to hold others accountable for breaking the law.”
The incident has drawn criticism and raised questions about the conduct of public officials, particularly those tasked with law enforcement. The ongoing investigation will determine what disciplinary action may be taken against Doorley.
